Two new cryptic species of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis complex (Squamata: Gekkonidae) from southern Vietnam

Abstract: We describe two new species of the Cyrtodactylus irregularis complex both based on phylogenetic analysis of 654 bp of COI mtDNA gene and morphological analyses of voucher specimens from Binh Phuoc and Lam Dong provinces, southern Vietnam. Cyrtodactylus bugiamapensis sp. nov. is described from the monsoon tropical forests of Bu Gia Map National Park, Binh Phuoc Province, and is distinguished from the remaining representatives of the C. irregularis complex by a combination of the following characters: (1) size medium, with a maximum SVL of 76.8 mm; (2) original tail relatively thin, longer than body; (3) presence of enlarged femoral scales without femoral pores; (4) preclocal groove lacking; (5) 36 46 longitudinal rows of ventral scales at midbody; (6) males with 7–11 precloacal pores in an angular continuous series; (7) absence of enlarged subcaudals; (8) dorsal pattern consisting of a dark neck band which can be medially divided, and irregular dark brown spots with bright white edges. Cyrtodactylus bidoupimontis sp. nov. is described from mountainous evergreen tropical forests of Bidoup – Nui Ba National Park, Lam Dong Province, and is most similar to C. irregularis sensu stricto from which it is distinguished by a combination of the following characters: (1) absence of enlarged, strongly keeled conical tubercles on the dorsal tail-base; (2) presence of flat rounded smooth to weakly keeled dorsal tubercles; (3) pallid dorsal head surface pattern lacking distinct dark brown irregular spots with light edges; and (4) elongated limbs. Phylogenetic analyses revealed the presence of a number of cryptic allopatric species within the C. irregularis complex. Long geological history and complicated relief of the Lang Bian plateau and surrounding areas might have shaped the present diversity within the C. irregularis complex. COI DNA-barcoding appears to be a useful tool to reveal cryptic diversity within the genus Cyrtodactylus.

Phaeoisaria vietnamensis sp. nov. and P. clematidis (hyphomycetes) from Vietnam

Abstract: A collection of a synnematous hyphomycete belonging in the genus Phaeoisaria was found on bark of a living unidentified liane in South Vietnam. It is described as a new species, Phaeoisaria vietnamensis, illustrated and compared with allied species. Furthermore, P. clematidis is recorded from two National Nature Parks in South Vietnam on different substrates.

A new species of Ardhachandra (hyphomycetes) from Vietnam

Abstract: A collection of a fungus belonging to the hyphomycete genus Ardhachandra was found on leaf litter of an unidentified broad-leaved tree in Vietnam and proved to be a new species, which is described as A. vietnamensis, illustrated and compared with allied species in the present paper.

A new species of the genus Mallomonas (Synurophyceae), Mallomonas spinosa sp. nov., from Vietnam

Abstract: Mallomonas spinosa sp. nov. is described from Vietnam. This species has domeless scales with unique four-edged spines, and which are ornamented with papillae. Mallomonas spinosa belongs to the section Papillosae. The morphological characteristics of the scales of the new species are documented by scanning electron micrographs and discussed in detail, including a comparison with related species in the genus Mallomonas.

Alona kotovi sp. nov., a new species of Aloninae (Cladocera: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) from South Vietnam

Abstract: A new species of anomopod related to Alona quadrangularis (Cladocera: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) is described from streams in South Vietnam. Alona kotovi sp. nov. differs from the other species of Alona s. str. (the quadrangularis-group) by the morphology of its postabdomen, labrum and thoracic limbs. The presence of a short spine at the end of the male postabdominal claw is unique to the new species. A. kotovi sp. nov. is well-distinguished from two other Old World species, A. quadrangularis and A. kolwezii, yet shares numerous similarities with South American A. yara. This is one more case of connection between South American and Australasian faunas of Chydoridae.

New and rare Aloninae (Cladocera: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) from Indochina

Abstract: Several poorly known cladocerans of the subfamily Aloninae (Cladocera: Anomopoda: Chydoridae) from Indochina region are reinvestigated. Revision of the genus Anthalona Van Damme, Sinev & Dumont 2011 from Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam reveals that the region is inhabited by Paleotropic Alona harti harti Van Damme, Sinev & Dumont, 2011 and a new species, Alona sanoamuangae sp. nov., which appears to be an Indochinese endemic. It has a number of features primitive for the genus, including non-specialised IDL setae and non-differentiated scraping setae. So far, these characters were recorded only in the Congolese A. simplex Van Damme, Sinev & Dumont, 2011, but A. sanoamuangae sp. nov. differs from it in the trilobed cosmaria of the lateral head pores. An updated key for the Anthalona of Eurasia and Africa is provided. The endemic Alona freyi Idris & Fernando, 1981 belongs to the recently described genus Matralona Van Damme & Dumont, 2010, sharing numerous common features with the type species, Matralona simoneae (Dumont, 1981). Alona macronyx Daday, 1898, despite numerous unique features, should be moved from Alona to Celsinotum Frey, 1999, and the diagnosis of Celsinotum should be emended. Finally, a new taxon with several unique features, Coronatella sp., was found in Thailand. Our investigation demonstrates once more the necessity of successive revisions of cladoceran taxa, even in relatively well-studied regions.

Ихтиофауна водохранилищ центрального Вьетнама

Впервые изучен видовой состав, распределение и численность рыб в пелагиали и литорали четырех водохранилищ Центрального Вьетнама (Суои Чау, Кам Лам, Да Бан, Суои Зау). По данным исследований, ихтиофауна водоемов представлена 43 видами из 19 семейств рыб.

Mesodorylaimus dolichurus sp. nov. (Nematoda, Dorylaimida) from freshwater body of Vietnam

Abstract: A new species of Mesodorylaimus Andrássy, 1959 is described and illustrated from Vietnam. Mesodorylaimus dolichurus sp. nov. is similar to M. flagellifer Andrássy, 2002 and M. derni Loof, 1969 and differs from both by longer odontostyle, longer tail in females, longer spicules and larger number of precloacal supplements in males.

Приводятся описание и иллюстрации нового вида рода Mesodorylaimus Andrássy, 1959 из Вьетнама. Mesodorylaimus dolichurus sp. nov. близок к M. flagellifer Andrássy, 2002 и M. derni Loof, 1969, но отличается от обоих более длинным копьем, более длинным хвостом у самок и более длинными спикулами и большим количеством преклоакальных супплементов у самцов.

Growth Phase-Dependent Modulation of Rgg Binding Specificity in Streptococcus pyogenes

Streptococcus pyogenes Rgg is a transcriptional regulator that interacts with the cofactor LacD.1 to control growth phase-dependent expression of genes, including speB, which encodes a secreted cysteine protease. LacD.1 is thought to interact with Rgg when glycolytic intermediates are abundant in a manner that prevents Rgg-mediated activation of speB expression via binding to the promoter region. When the intermediates diminish, LacD.1 dissociates from Rgg and binds to the speB promoter to activate expression. The purpose of this study was to determine if Rgg bound to chromatin during the exponential phase of growth and, if so, to identify the binding sites. Rgg bound to 62 chromosomal sites, as determined by chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with DNA microarrays. Thirty-eight were within noncoding DNA, including sites upstream of the genes encoding them protein (M49), serum opacity factor (SOF), fibronectin-binding protein (SfbX49), and a prophage-encoded superantigen, SpeH. Each of these sites contained a promoter that was regulated by Rgg, as determined with transcriptional fusion assays. Purified Rgg also bound to the promoter regions of emm49, sof, and sfbX49 in vitro. Results obtained with a lacD.1 mutant showed that both LacD.1 and Rgg were necessary for the repression of emm49, sof, sfbX49, and speH expression. Overall, the results indicated that the DNA binding specificity of Rgg is responsive to environmental changes in a LacD.1-dependent manner and that Rgg and LacD.1 directly control virulence gene expression in the exponential phase of growth.

Происхождение возбудителя чумы – микроба Yersinia pestis: структура видообразовательного процесса

Происхождение и эволюция микроба чумы Yersinia pestis рассмотрены в контексте положений современного дарвинизма. Показано, что возбудитель чумы дивергировал от псевдотуберкулезного микроба Yersinia pseudotuberculosis O:1b в горностепных ландшафтах Центральной Азии в сартанское время, 22–15 тыс. лет назад. Видообразование прошло в паразитарной системе монгольский сурок-тарбаган (Marmota sibirica)–блоха Oropsylla silantiewi. В структуре видообразовательного процесса выделено шесть этапов: изоляция, генетический дрейф, нарастание внутрипопуляционного полиморфизма, начало синтеза пестицина (геномный конфликт и возникновение хиатуса), специализация (стабилизация признаков), адаптивная иррадиация (преобразование монотипического вида Y. pestis tarbagani в политипический вид). Сценарий открывает широкие перспективы для построения молекулярной филогении чумного микроба Y. pestis и изучения биохимических и молекулярно-генетических аспектов “дарвинской” эволюции возбудителей многих других природно-очаговых инфекционных болезней.

Origin of the Plague Microbe Yersinia pestis: Structure of the Process of Speciation

Abstract: The origin and evolution of the plague microbe Yersinia pestis are considered in the context of propositions of modern Darwinism. It was shown that the plague pathogen diverged from the pseudotuberculous microbe Yersinia pseudotuberculosis O:1b in the mountain steppe landscapes of Central Asia in the Sartan: 22000–15000 years ago. Speciation occurred in the tarbagan (Marmota sibirica)–flea (Oropsylla silantiewi) parasitic system. The structure of the speciation process included six stages: isolation, genetic drift, enhancement of intrapopulational polymorphism, the beginning of pesticin synthesis (genetic conflict and emergence of hiatus), specialization (stabilization of characteristics), and adaptive irradiation (transformation of the monotypic species Y. pestis tarbagani into a polytypic species). The scenario opens up wide prospects for construction of the molecular phylogeny of the plague microbe Y. pestis and for investigation of the biochemical and molecular–genetic aspects of “Darwinian” evolution of pathogens from many other nature-focal infections.

Геномный полиморфизм Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis

Streptococcus dysgalactiae subspecies equisimilis является наиболее распространенным представителем стрептококков группы G и важным этиологическим агентом многих заболеваний человека. Несмотря на опубликование полногеномной последовательности S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis, данные о генетической гетерогенности этого подвида практически отсутствуют в современной литературе. В настоящей работе проведен сравнительный анализ большой коллекции штаммов S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis, выделенных в различных географических регионах. Проанализировано наличие генов вирулентности scpG, lmb, nga, speG и ska. Обнаружена выраженная гетерогенность гена scpG. Осуществлено emm-генотипирование ряда штаммов. Проведен анализ штаммов методом электрофореза в пульсирующем электрическом поле. В результате работы выявлен значительный геномный полиморфизм S. dysgalactiae subsp. equisimilis.
