Morphological and Behavioral Variation of Rasbora paviei (Cyprinidae, Cypriniformes) from Lotic and Limnic Habitats (Central Vietnam)
I. A. Stolbunov, N. T. Hai Than, and D. S. Pavlov

Abstract: Morphological and behavioral traits of Rasbora paviei from river and lake environments are studied. For investigations, the fish were caught from the middle reaches of the Cai River and from the inshore zone of the Kam Lam Reservoir (Khanh Hoa Province, Central Vietnam). Phenotypic differences are found in river and lake fish groups. Experimentally, differences in tactics and efficiency of defensive behavior are found in specimens from different habitats in the presence of a predator—Lepisosteus sp. (Lepisosteidae). In river specimens of Rasbora, the defensive reaction is more efficient in comparison with specimens from the reservoir. The river specimens of Rasbora used predominantly the tactics of group defense from the predator and stayed in a school longer than the lake specimens.

Synonymous Mutations in the Core Gene Are Linked to Unusual Serological Profile in Hepatitis C Virus Infection

Abstract: The biological role of the protein encoded by the alternative open reading frame (core+1/ARF) of the Hepatitis C virus (HCV) genome remains elusive, as does the significance of the production of corresponding antibodies in HCV infection. We investigated the prevalence of anti-core and anti-core+1/ARFP antibodies in HCV-positive blood donors from Cambodia, using peptide and recombinant protein-based ELISAs. We detected unusual serological profiles in 3 out of 58 HCV positive plasma of genotype 1a. These patients were negative for anti-core antibodies by commercial and peptide-based assays using C-terminal fragments of core but reacted by Western Blot with full-length core protein. All three patients had high levels of anti-core+1/ARFP antibodies. Cloning of the cDNA that corresponds to the core-coding region from these sera resulted in the expression of both core and core+1/ARFP in mammalian cells. The core protein exhibited high amino-acid homology with a consensus HCV1a sequence. However, 10 identical synonymous mutations were found, and 7 were located in the aa(99–124) region of core. All mutations concerned the third base of a codon, and 5/10 represented a T.C mutation. Prediction analyses of the RNA secondary structure revealed conformational changes within the stem-loop region that contains the core+1/ARFP internal AUG initiator at position 85/87. Using the luciferase tagging approach, we showed that core+1/ARFP expression is more efficient from such a sequence than from the prototype HCV1a RNA. We provide additional evidence of the existence of core+1/ARFP in vivo and new data concerning expression of HCV core protein. We show that HCV patients who do not produce normal anti-core antibodies have unusually high levels of antit-core+1/ARFP and harbour several identical synonymous mutations in the core and core+1/ARFP coding region that result in major changes in predicted RNA structure. Such HCV variants may favour core+1/ARFP production during HCV infection.

Elaboration of Equipment and Methods of Continuous Recording of Electric Activity of Clariid Catfish (Clariidae, Siluriformes) in Social and Reproductive Behavior
V. M. Olshansky

Abstract: Equipment and methods of simultaneous continuous long-term recording of electric activity of
clariid catfish (Clariidae) is elaborated. All electric organ discharges (EOD) in any position and orientation
of free swimming fish are fixed by simultaneous recording of electric voltage with two mutually perpendicular pairs of electrodes. Light-emitting diodes controlled by a microprocessor allow for the possibility to observe the moments of discharge emission both in real time and during scanning of videorecords. According to its parameters, the created equipment corresponds to characteristics of EOD of clariid catfish, performs primary treatment of signals, and stores in its inner flash memory all discharges recorded in a prolonged experiment (duration up to several days, number of EOD up to several tens of thousands). Various examples of EOD are presented recorded by means of the elaborated methods in clariid catfish (C. macrocephalus, C. batrachus, C. fiscus, and hybrids C. gariepinus and C. macrocephalus) when they manifested aggressive-defensive and spawning behavior. The procedure of treatment of EOD is suggested, including that of special bursts of EODs generated by females in pairing.

Key words: weakly electric fish, clariid catfish, electric organ discharges (EODs), burst of EODs, recording
equipment, social behavior, aggressive behavior, and reproductive behavior.

Downstream Migration of Juvenile Fish in the Krasnaya River (Vietnam)
V. K. Nezdolii, D. S. Pavlov, Tran Thanh Lan, Pham Hong Phuong, and Nguyen Quoc Khanh

Abstract: The first material is presented on downstream migration of fish juveniles in the Krasnaya River, one of the largest rivers in South-East Asia. The spatial-temporal structure of distribution of downstream-migrating fish juveniles in the Krasnaya River has traits usually characteristic of migration in rovers with turbid water. Concentration of fish was extremely variable by the time of the day, river length, and depth. In lengthwise distribution, there was a tendency to increasing concentration of downstream migrants from the upper stretches to the downstream stretch. In the upper reaches, Perciformes prevailed, in the middle part, Cypriniformes prevailed, and in the lower reaches of the river Clupeiformes prevailed. During 24 hours, Clupeiformes and Perciformes migrated more intensively at night and Cypriniformes migrated more in the daytime.By depth horizons, Clupeiformes made downstream migration predominantly at the surface and Cypriniformes and Perciformes did at the bottom. These differences may be caused by species differences in fish biology, local specific traits of stream hydraulics, anthropogenous factors, etc.

Key words: migration, distribution, diurnal dynamics, fish juveniles.

Ultrastructural features of the tegumental surface of a new metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp. (Trematoda: Strigeidae), with a search for potential taxonomically informative characters

Larisa G. Poddubnaya, Elena Mishina, Alexander E. Zhokhov, David I. Gibson

Abstract: The tegumental surface of a new strigeid metacercaria, Nematostrigea sp., which is a parasite of the freshwater fish Channa gachua (Hamilton) in central Vietnam, is described for the first time using scanning (SEM) and transmission (TEM) electron microscopy. In addition to the general tegumental surface in various parts of the body, details of the surface of the suckers, lappets and holdfast organ are presented, as are variations in the form and distribution of the body spines. As good taxonomic criteria are few in diplostomoid metacercariae at both specific and generic levels, a number of the ultrastructural features revealed may prove to represent taxonomically informative characters. These include the presence of: two rings of dome-shaped papillae localised at different levels on the rim of the oral sucker, a single ring of ciliated papillae on the inner margin of the ventral sucker and a band of dome-shaped papillae along the lateral margins of the broad body-fold in the ventral forebody; an unarmed oral sucker and anteroventral surface of the forebody, although the latter bears protuberant secretory pores; an armed ventral sucker covered by six-pointed spines, except on its rim; multi-pointed spines along the dorsal and ventral sides of the forebody, with the number of their teeth increasing posteriorly; multipointed spines on the forebody which gradually transform into single-pointed, more widely distributed spines on the hindbody, disappearing completely at posterior end of the body; the surface of the lappets with a particular distribution of pores leading to three types of secretory glands and three topographical modifications (areas where the surface is smooth, bears digitiform processes or bears recurved, dagger-shaped spines); and the surface of the holdfast organ which is covered with densely packed, straight or slightly curved, simple spines on its lateral surface but is smooth medially.

Electric Discharges of Two Species of Stargazers from the South China Sea (Uranoscopidae, Perciformes)
V. D. Baron

Abstract: Experimentally, the specialized electrogenerative activity is discovered in two representatives of the family Uranoscopidae (Uranoscopus bicinctus and U. affinis) living in the coastal zone of Nha Trang Bay of the South China Sea (Vietnam). For the first time, the electric discharges of duration up to 100 ms are recorded in U. bicinctus and up to 300 ms in U. affinis. The discharges are monopolar oscillations of the potential with electronegativity in the area of the fish head. Distribution of potentials on the body surface of the stargazer was investigated. It is shown that the electric field during the discharge has dipole characteristics and the zone of the “null” equipotential is situated in the area of the soft dorsal fin. Electrophysiological experiments, using the method of microelectrode stimulation of different regions of the brain, demonstrated that stable electric discharges are caused by stimulation of the medial zone of the bottom of the fourth ventricle in medulla oblongata. The discharges caused in such way are fully analogous to those generated spontaneously and under mechanical stimulation of the skin. Thus, the conclusion could be made on localization of the stargazer’s electromotor center in this zone.

Key words: stargazers, electrogeneration, electromotor centers.

(Dendrogale murina, Scandentia)

Mammals regularly follow birds that move searching food in tropical forests of Africa, Asia and South America. We give a review of literature that deal with this phenomenon and describe our observations made at the South of Vietnam. Bird parties are accompanied by relatively mobile terrestrial or arboreal small-sized diurnal mammals that forage alone or (rarely) in small groups and can be omnivorous (at least partly), such as squirrels (Rodentia: Sciuridae), tree-shrews (Scandentia: Tupaiidae) and mouse deers (Artiodactyla: Tragulidae). Birds forewarn mammals about predator approach and facilitate them access to some food resources. [Russian].

Key words: behaviour, foraging, association, interaction.
