Autecology and mating behaviour of the Spotted Forest Skink, Sphenomorphus maculatus (Blyth, 1853) in the monsoon forest of Cat Tien National Park, southern Vietnam
Eduard Galoyan, Peter Geissler

Abstract: The autecology of the SpottedForest Skink Sphenomorphus maculatus (Blyth, 1853) is described for the first time. Individually marked animals within a chosen study site in a deciduous mixed forest in Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai Province, southern Vietnam were observed in two adjacent years. Sphenomorphus maculatus is a diurnal, small terrestrial skink with a short lifespan of about one year, and an accordingly high growth rate. Shuttling is the main behavioural feature to maintain a body temperature of 31–32°C. These insectivorous skinks primarily demonstrate an actively foraging mode, feeding on active and immobile prey measuring 5–40 mm in size. The reproductive period starts in April, at the onset of the rainy season, and continues until May and June when females oviposit. Courtship and mating behaviour is strictly ritualized. Juveniles emerge at the end of the rainy season (August September).

Anna B. Vassilieva, Peter Geissler, Eduard A. Galoyan, Nikolay A. Poyarkov Jr, Robert Wayne Van Devender & Wolfgang Böhme

Abstract: We describe a new species of the genus Oligodon from the lowland forests of Cat Tien National Park, Dong Nai Province, in southern Vietnam. Oligodon cattienensis sp. nov. is distinguished from the remaining Southeast Asian kukri snakes by the combination of the following characters: medium-sized, deeply forked hemipenes without spines, 17-17-15 dorsal scale rows, nasal entire, 2 small postoculars, almost equal in size, 167–178 ventrals, 31–35 subcaudals, 24–35 + 5 large dark-edged vertebral blotches in combination with a yellow-orange or red vertebral stripe between blotches, head pattern including ocular band, temporal bands and elongated chevron, ventrals pink or whitish (reddish in juveniles) in life, some bearing a quadrangular dark blotch on each lateral side, or ventrals being entirely dark. Based on the hemipenial morphol-ogy the new species is assigned to the Oligodon cyclurus species group. A comparison table for all Indochinese Oligodon is provided.

Rhacophorus vampyrus (Anura: Rhacophoridae) Reproductive Biology: A New Type of Oophagous Tadpole in Asian Treefrogs
Anna B. Vassilieva, Eduard A. Galoyan and Nikolay A. Poyarkov Jr.

Abstract: We report on the reproductive biology of Rhacophorus vampyrus (Rhacophoridae, Anura) from the Lang Bian Plateau in southern Vietnam. Unlike most other members of the genus Rhacophorus, R. vampyrus is a phytotelm breeder and reproduces in water-filled tree hollows. The species shows a unique tadpole mouthpart morphology not reported for any other anurans: presence of a specific serrated horny arch on the upper jaw and two large, fang-like horny teeth on the lower jaw. This, together with the presence of a large extensible stomach and relatively short digestive tract length, indicates an adaptation toward macrophagous feeding. We observed two clutch types in R. vampyrus: fertilized eggs included in a typical foam nest and unfertilized eggs, apparently having a trophic function, enveloped by dense mucous. The digestive tracts of all tadpoles examined contained up to 40 trophic eggs and showed no remains of any other food. Keratinous mouthparts undergo considerable remodeling during tadpole development presuming the change of feeding mode in ontogeny. We speculate that these findings indicate that the tadpole of R. vampyrus is an obligatorily and highly specialized oophagous type with unique mouthpart structures. The advanced form of parental care, including the maternal provisioning of unfertilized eggs, is reported for the first time for the genus Rhacophorus and is the second documented record for the Rhacophoridae.

Kinematics of Chiropteran Shoulder Girdle in Flight
A. A. Panyutina, A. N. Kuznetsov, L. P. Korzun

Abstract: New data on the mechanisms of movements of the shoulder girdle and humerus of bats are described; potential mobility is compared to the movements actually used in flight. The study was performed on the basis of morphological and functional analysis of anatomical specimens of 15 species, high speed and high definition filming of two species and X-ray survey of Rousettus aegyptiacus flight. Our observations indicate that any excursions of the shoulder girdle in bats have relatively small input in the wing amplitude. Shoulder girdle movements resemble kinematics of a crank mechanism: clavicle plays the role of crank, and scapula—the role of connecting rod. Previously described osseous “locking mechanisms” in shoulder joint of advanced bats do not affect the movements, actually used in flight. The wing beats in bats are performed predominantly by movements of humerus relative to shoulder girdle, although these movements occupy the caudal-most sector of available shoulder mobility.

Rgg
А. В. M. S. Chaussee

Rgg.
